Fort Wayne (27-33) fell behind 2-0 after one inning. Eugenio Suarez hit a ground rule double, and advanced to third on a groundout. Dean Green then struck out swinging, and started running to first on a wild pitch by Portillo. Green continued to second as catcher Austin Hedges tried to complete the strikeout with a throw to first, but that attempt sailed wide and down the right field line. Suarez scored and Green ended up at second base. Green later scored on a single from Curt Casali.
Portillo (4-3) was knocked out of the game in the second inning by the West Michigan (30-30) offense. The 20-year-old pitcher walked the first two batters of the frame and was pulled after a sacrifice bunt attempt by Chad Wright was thrown wide of first by Duanel Jones, resulting in a third West Michigan run. Jones had two errors on Thursday.
James Needy then entered to pitch, and allowed both inherited runners to score. Needy worked a season-high four innings in relief of Portillo, and allowed one earned run while striking out two. Luis De La Cruz and Johnny Barbato each pitched for the TinCaps, giving up three and two runs, respectively.
Whitecaps starter Brennan Smith went four innings, making reliever Jeff Ferrell (2-1) the winning pitcher, as he worked two innings behind Smith.
The first TinCaps run came in the third on a solo home run by Kyle Gaedele. It was his second home run of the year. The other Fort Wayne was tallied on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Austin Hedges in the sixth.
Thursday night the TinCaps went 1-12 with runners in scoring position, and stranded 14 men on the basepaths. In the TinCaps four-game losing streak, the team has been outscored 28-8.The team's other four-game skid this year came from April 13th-April 16th. Portillo's outing replaces Joe Ross' April 7th start of 1 1/3 innings against Lake County as the shortest start of the year for a TinCaps pitcher. The four errors committed by Fort Wayne in the game tied a season high.
On Friday night the TinCaps look to avoid being swept for the first time this season. The scheduled starters are Colin Rea for Fort Wayne and Wilsen Palacios for West Michigan. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM.
